CPD module: Pharmacy First

Charles Gladwin reviews the features of the Pharmacy First advanced service in England.

After completing this module, you should be more aware of:

  • the major changes introduced with the new advanced pharmacy service;
  • the 24 new patient group directions (PGDs) for the clinical pathways;
  • key sources of information on implementing the Pharmacy First Service;
  • a requirement for evidence of competence;
  • education support and training materials;
  • PGD expectations for use of guidelines and patient information sources that will help inform the clinical consultation;
  • patient journeys whether by referrals or walk-in under the Pharmacy First Scheme and the ‘gateway’ point;
  • IT systems and the need to check for patient referrals regularly;
  • recording requirements, updating the patient record and notifying the patient’s general practice;
  • equipment required to conduct consultations in a consulting room or via video;
  • operational hours and how to temporarily withdraw the PFS;
  • fees and reimbursement, including monthly targets, and planned changes to service remuneration from 2025.
